Stamped Cross Stitch Kits
In stamped cross stitch, the pattern is pre-printed directly onto the fabric using water-soluble ink. You simply stitch over the X marks.
- Best for absolute beginners
- No counting required
Counted Cross Stitch
In counted cross stitch, the fabric is blank (usually Aida). You follow a PDF chart (like the ones our generator makes) and count stitches from the center.
- Infinite design possibilities
- Use any photo or image
- More professional finish
How to Cross Stitch for Beginners
Start creating your first masterpiece with this simple 4-step guide.
1. Prepare Your Fabric
Choose an Aida fabric (14-count is standard). Use our calculator to cut it to size, adding 3 inches of margin on all sides. Secure it in an embroidery hoop.
2. Read the Pattern
Find the center of your chart (marked with arrows) and the center of your fabric. This is where you will start stitching.
3. Thread Your Needle
Cut a length of DMC floss (about 18 inches). Separate 2 strands from the 6-strand skein. Thread your tapestry needle.
4. Start Stitching
Bring the needle up at the bottom-left corner of a square and down at the top-right. This makes a half stitch (/). Complete a row, then come back crossing each one () to form an X.
Tips for Best Cross Stitch Pattern Results
Use High Resolution Images
Upload images at 300 DPI or higher. More detail in the source image means a more accurate cross stitch pattern.
Limit Your Color Palette
Fewer DMC colors mean fewer thread changes while stitching. Start with 10-20 colors for manageable projects.
Choose the Right Grid Size
Smaller grids (50-80 stitches) are great for bookmarks and ornaments. Larger grids (150-300) are ideal for wall art.
Consider Your Fabric
14-count Aida is the most popular. Higher counts give finer detail but take longer to stitch.
Simplify Complex Photos
Portraits and landscapes work best when you reduce colors and increase contrast before converting.
