Converting Photos to Embroidery: What You Need to Know

Photo Stitch is a magical technique where different colored threads are layered to create a photorealistic image. Unlike standard logo embroidery which uses solid blocks of color, photo stitch uses a technique similar to pointillism.

1. Choose High Contrast Photos

Embroidery thread doesn't have the millions of colors your phone screen does. It has a limited palette. Photos with clear, high contrast between the subject and the background translate best.

2. The Subject Matters

Close-up portraits of faces or pets work wonderfully. Landscapes with tiny details often become muddy because a thread is much thicker than a pixel.

3. Color Management

Our tool will reduce the colors of your image to a manageable number (usually 10-15 thread colors). You can choose to map this to a specific palette like Brother or Madeira. Be prepared to change threads frequently!

4. Stabilization is Key

Photo stitch designs are incredibly dense. They put thousands of stitches into a small area. You must use a heavy-duty cut-away stabilizer, and possibly a second layer, to prevent your fabric from being "chewed up" by the needle.
